Andover is a borough located in Sussex County, New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough’s population was 595. The borough of Andover was incorporated on March 25, 1904, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, and it was formed from portions of Andover Township. The naming of the borough was influenced by Andover Township, which itself was named after Andover, Hampshire, England.

Andover Township History

Andover Township is located in Sussex County, New Jersey. The township was incorporated on April 11, 1864, from parts of Newton Township, which was dissolved on the same date. Over the years, parts of Andover Township were taken to form Fredon Township and Andover borough. Additionally, some portions of the township were ceded to Newton town in 1869 and 1927. The naming of the township is believed to be influenced by Andover, Hampshire, England. Before World War II, Andover Township was home to Camp Nordland, a 204-acre property owned by the German American Bund, an American Nazi organization. The camp was shut down by the federal government after Germany declared war on the United States and was sold at auction in 1944. The property was later acquired by Andover Township and is now known as Hillside Park, featuring a recreational hall and sports fields.

Andover Township spans an area of 20.79 square miles, of which 20.05 square miles is land and 0.75 square miles is water. The township includes several unincorporated communities and localities such as Brighton, County Road Camp, Davis Pond, Drakes Pond, Garders Lake, Iliffs Lake, Lake Aeroflex, Lake Iliff, Lake Lenape, Long Pond, Mulford, New Waywayanda Lake, Pinkneyville, Redings Pond, Springdale, Stickle Pond, Sussex Mills, Whitehall, and Whites Pond. Andover Township shares its borders with several other Sussex County municipalities including Andover, Byram Township, Fredon Township, Green Township, Hampton Township, Lafayette Township, and Sparta Township.
