Hardyston Township, located in Sussex County, New Jersey, has a rich history dating back to its establishment by Royal charter on February 25, 1762, and was named after Josiah Hardy, a royal governor of New Jersey from 1761 to 1763. The township was incorporated on February 21, 1798, and over the years, portions of it were taken to form other townships and boroughs, including Vernon Township, Sparta Township, Franklin, and Hamburg. Hardyston was first serviced by the New Jersey Midland Railway, which built the station in Stockholm, and later by the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway. The township has also experienced name changes in some of its areas, such as the change from Snufftown to Stockholm.
